Training for Alpen Brevet: Sustenpass (2224 m)

To prepare for the AlpenBrevet on 13th August, I did  the Sustenpass from Wassen: 17,7 km with the climbing altitude of 1308 m.

The road starts climbing immediately through a narrow valley and later on the road becomes a little bit flatter and passes after 11 km through the village “Fährningen”. After the village the climb is most of the time at 7%. Psychologically difficult is that the road is straight up and you always see how far you have to go.

On the top it was freezing cold (3 C) and my bike computer immediately stopped working. As there was already rain on the climb, I was happy to bring a 2nd rain-jacket. The first one was wet after one hour. So I managed the 1.602 m downhill to Innerkirchen over 27,7 km. There were a lot of tunnels and the road really wet, so I am sure, I didn’t do it in 25 min as the riders of the Tour de Suisse with average speed between 80-90km/h. Cavendish’s top speed was 107 km/h and this also with rain and not knowing the road. He must have had also some fear, I guess.

After Innertkirchen I continued on to Meiringen the start and finish village of the AlpenBrevet and then over the Brünig Pass (1008 m) with a climb of 412 m. Today’s total: an estimated 110 km and 2100 m climbing altitude (my bike computer stopped on the Susten!).
